Andalucia
Granada: The footprints of the Caliphate.
A kingdom within a kingdom.
Southern Spain is a world apart, boasting the only Arab heritage within Western Europe. Millions of olive trees comb the green valleys between white villages and Moorish fortresses. The arabs loved the sun, the mountains and the fragrance of Andalusian orange blossoms and lemons. Here they settled and created their own little paradise in the world, refusing to return to the desert. Andalusia dazzles with it’s fantastic beaches, rich gastronomy, culture and above all, the warmth of its people. From phoenicians, to greeks, romans, visigoths, arabs, to call Andalusia a melting pot would be an understatement.
CÓRDOBA
It is said that the Mosque of Córdoba could hold the whole population of London at the time it was built. Cordoba is a work of art in itself. From there, we reach the mountains of Malaga and the forests around Ronda, the old roman town split in two by its narrow gorge.
Granada is possibly one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, it is a privileged enclave that allows you to ski down a 10,000 feet mountain, swim in the Mediterranean sea and watch the sunset from a 15th century palace, all in the same day. A land of contrasts, from the desert of Tabernas, the only desert in Europe, set of Sergio Leone’s cheesy westerns of the seventies, to the nearby palm tree beaches of turquoise waters of the Cabo de Gata National Park. We can paddle there in a sea kayak, snorkel or discover its coast by bike. Discover La Mota Fortress, almost as big as la Alhambra. Entice yourself with the Andalusian cuisine and learn how to make olive oil in a 100 years family business press. Enjoy a bike ride from the mountain to the shore, try a meditation session under the shade of the lemon trees and a mountain hike at the Alpujarra or southern face of Sierra Nevada where bandits were hidden by XIX century and later housed several hippies communes and a few eccentric british rock stars in the 70´s.
